Students should spend at least one year working or travelling before they go to the university.
Gap year, a break between high school and college, has become a trend among many American and European students theses years. As the popularity of gap year has grown, so to has its appeal. Generally, it can be constructed (working in a company, taking time off to improve coding skills, learning a language, working on personal projects) or unconstructed (travelling, figuring out what to do as it comes). The idea of gap year has been strongly questioned by some nervous parents, however, some supporters contend that it will be a lifelong treasure which enables one to have the full command of his life. From my perspective, taking a year to work or travel before college brings about more advantages than shortcomings.
To begin with, a gap year helps guide students’ future education and life goals. Most of young students do not know exactly what they wanted to do once they left high school or even half way through college. Working or travelling a year will give them some “real world experience” as well as insight into their interests and strengths which will help them shape a path to a successful career. Once students learn a whole lot about themselves, they are likely to take full advantage of college. Take an Australian boy for an example. Enjoying his gap year in Nepal, he helps the locals in Pokhara to build their organic farms. He is so passionate about what he is doing now and he decided to pursue environmental science after he comes back to university. The internships and professional experience gained over the gap year will have much more influence on the development of one’s future than college.
In addition, taking a year off can refresh the tired-out high school graduates. In general, it will take at least ten years before jumping into the long and challenging years of university. There is no doubt that studious students will spare no effort to improve their academic performance with the expectation that they will receive offers from their dream schools. Under the competitive pressure of high school, they will not only prepare for exams such as SAT or ACT but also seek for voluntary opportunities to enrich their Curriculum Vitae. My younger sister used to travel to Cuba to volunteer with brown bears for three months. After that she went to Europe driving her Vespa across more than 20 cities. She said it was so different from school. She won’t have to attend a test at then end of the trimester, which means that there is no peer pressure or any pressure from outside. At the same time she can reorganize her mind which was full of chemical equations, historical events as well as verses from poems.
It is true that students who choose to drop a year are more likely to lose their study skills. During the gap year, there will be less chances for them to participate in actual classes in college. Without attending lectures given by famous professor and communicating face-to-face with classmates, the whole learning process will be incomplete. Many of study skills could not be developed and trained, which leads directly to the deprivation of both academic ability and motivation. However, it won’t be a potential problem nowadays because most of top universities offer MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses). Students can study random topics through free online classes. Although they don’t have any college credit, they learned a lot, met wonderful people, and keep their brains in shape for college.
Ultimately, the benefits of gap year far outweigh the only drawback because it can help exhausted students relax both mentally and physically and provide them with the opportunities to take a step back to focus on their goals, leading to a stronger sense of direction once they’re back in the classroom.!

Nowadays, children rely too much on the technology, like com*rs, smartphone, video games for fun and entertainment; playing simpler toys or playing outside with friends would be better for the children"s development.
Technological advancement has contributed to the invention of a wide range of electronic products and there are an increasing number of children who are reported to rely heavily on the technology. Thus, the controversy is raised among the public whether playing simpler toys or playing outside with friends are better for the children’s development. From my perspective, I insist on that depending on high technology is a rather right decision.
For one thing, children can learn more about the world and develop a better way of resolving problems. For instance, the upcoming Fourth Industrial Revolution heralds a thorough change of the composition of working force in the society and learning the latest news through com*rs or smartphones will lead children to be aware of what are needed urgently and what have been outdated, in this way, they can decide what kinds of capabilities and qualities they should develop for being accustomed to the fast-changing world. Besides, children nowadays have to accomplish diverse curriculums many difficult assignments like writing a paper related to how independent war was sparkled or what consequences had been aroused after the assassination of Lincoln. Com*rs can help resolve the problem more effectively by providing students with abundant references and historic documentation. Additionally, there have been more educational programs spreading through the Internet like TED that is designed to disseminate the most outstanding professors’ lectures throughout the world to share the greatest ideas with people in every corner of the world. Obviously, relying on the high-tech devices can be of great benefits for children both to resolve the problems they might meet during their study and learn more things beyond their textbooks.
For another thing, video games have been designed to be more alluring and intellectually demanding. To be more specific, there have occurred many more video games that are invented to exploit children’s imagination and also release their pressure. Take Minecraft, a popular game sweeping many primary and high school students, as an example. In the game, players can use diverse construction materials and tools to construct what they like such as a castle or a skyscraper even a city. Besides, by decorating the entities they created in many different styles, massive intellectual activities are needed like how to design the roof the house and where should put the pets in the city and etc. During the process, students can be fully occupied in the game, serving as an antidote to boredom that will be detrimental to students’ mental health if it can be erased promptly. Consequently, playing video games is a better choice for students to make to release their pressure and ensure their health.
Granted, I have to admit that playing outside with friends is also a better way of releasing pressure like playing sports that can help exercise children’s bodies to improve their physical quality. However, children might be injured while joining sports since they are lack of adequate physical exercises usually. However, playing video games will not trigger any possible injuries.
In a word, relying on technology is a better choice than playing simple toys or playing outside with friends for children’s development. Learning more out of the classroom, resolving academic problems as well as releasing workloads effectively can all reveal the superiority of relying on technology.

Agree or disagree: students do reading by their own is as important as or more important than the reading teachers assigned.
Sure enough, to open a book is always beneficial. Reading, by occupying time so constructively, can make us feel contented, with no time for boredom. Whether reading books arranged by teachers or to enjoy our favorite works has sparkled a debate. I always believe that to read books that really interest us can best stimulate our reading zeal and tap our infinite potentials.
Free reading, as a superior option, has many advantages. It provides relaxation for leisure hours and thus kindles our reading interests. Indeed, interest is the best teacher. To read good books can be a habit-formation only when we find plenty of fun in reading. More precisely, the pleasure of reading lies in reading itself. For example, as a fancier of literature, I used to read a great many literary works. Reading those thought-provoking books stirred my vivid imagination, stimulated my creativity, and deepened my insights into life. On the contrary, I might slacken my efforts atreading and my reading enthusiasm might wither if I was forced to read unfavorite books
Secondly, students might loose the ability to make independent choice if they only read at the guidance of teachers. By that I mean, it is highly possible that those who only read books recommended by educators will feel at sea once teachers once they lose their exterior incentives.Meanwhile, one man’s meat is another man’s poison. People’s reading tastes differ greatly, some reading assignments designed by teachers, even though are meaty and classic, might fail to arouse every individual’s reading impulses and arouse their sympathies. In this sense, reading might lose its charm.
Indeed, I have to concede that most reading assignment designed or recommended by teachers have withstood the test of instructional experiment. Those reading lists, in most cases, are carefully chosen. Thereby, to do some reading praised by teachers can help students avoid aimless reading and save precious time. What I want to rebut, however, is that students should be encouraged to make their own reading choices, what educators need to do maybe just provide timely guidance and useful suggestions.
In sum, my standpoint is that to inspire students to make free reading choices is one of the best approaches to ignite their reading interests and motivate their reading zeal.

(2)手机和电脑交流时不用注意对方的手势和表情,导致我们对声调、表情等非语言因素阅读能力的下降;

Now you are benefiting from the use of mobile phone and the Internet as social interaction media, could you imagine what your daily lives would be without these inventions? Some people claim that individuals are gradually losing face-to-face communication skills. Nevertheless, from personal perspective, online communication cannot make people lose the ability of offline communication.
Apparently, excessive use of the Internet and mobile phones has been undermining our interpersonal relationship offline. Even during a face-to-face conversation, it is no rare thing that everyone is busy looking at his cell phones, neglecting his friends or families across the dinner table. In addition, it has become incredibly easy to contact each other electronically and share information instantly in social community. Gone are the days when people could only communicate via fixed telephone or writing letters which took several days to reach others. So no one is not crazy about smart phones and com*rs which boast cutting-edge functions like sharing photos and videos with more friends simultaneously.
In spite of the popularity of technological progress mentioned above, never should we turn a blind eye to the irreplaceablity of face-to-face communication. It is common that many schools impart knowledge to students by teaching in classrooms instead of distance education. The same is true of the cooperation among companies, which needs face to face conversation to acquire trust with each other in advance. Furthermore, although online contact may possess increasing numbers of friends, the permanence of mutual relationships cannot lack face-to-face interactions, which can be confirmed by the example of the closest friends and even loving couples. Besides, solving tricky issues are generally more effective and more convenient by surrounding colleagues or friends then by those who live and work in remote places and need online communication.
As far as social interaction is concerned, although the cell phone and the Internet have updated the lives of the current generation. People cannot forget how to make offline communication with each other.
We live in a world where communication through modern technology such as smart phone and com*r is so prevalent that it’s hard to go anywhere without seeing someone texting, emailing, writing blogs and tweeting. Of course the use of technology can be good. It provides us with faster, more efficient ways to communicate with others, but it can also harm our ability to communicate with people face to face.
Studies have shown that students who rely so heavily on technology have trouble communicating in person because they don’t quite develop all of the necessary skills to hold or even start a face-to-face conversation. For example, students who are constantly texting with abbreviated forms of words such as “LOL” and “OMG” have begun to speak with the same acronyms. This form of talking is often seen as flighty and uneducated. Furthermore, in the face to face communication, especially the serious ones, such as interviewing someone, or just meeting someone for the first time, we need to catch the subtle tone in their voice, see their expression as it changes from sad to outraged, and look them in the eye to see if they are trustworthy. Yet most of these skills have been lost to our obsession to the smart phone and com*r.
In addition, many of us have formed the habit of using the smart phone even when they are with their friends. The unspoken subtext of checking text messages in front of friends is: “Somewhere else there is someone who I care about more than you. I want to know what they have to say more than what you have to say to me now.” In this way, we are devaluing our current situation, the friends and family around us, our surroundings and setting, for something going on elsewhere. This is certainly a complete disrespect for the people we spend time with in person, which may ruin our relationship with them.
In summary, though I believe the smart phone and com*r are very useful in speeding up our communication with others, they may prevent us from finding enough time to communicate with real people in person and even worse, they may result in ineffectiveness or even failure in our face-to-face interactions with others.

Nacza Lines

The straight lines and the central shape with straight line are “Nazca Lines”
The term “Nazca Lines” refer to a series of images created in the desert of Peru about 2,000 years ago. These images, many depicting geometric shapes, are extremely large with some covering several kilometers. Although researchers know how the Nazca Lines were created--the top layer of dark rocks were removed from the desert floor, exposing the lighter soil underneath--they remain uncertain why they were created. Several theories have been suggested to account for the presence of these lines.
One theory is that the Nazca Lines were used as an astronomical calendar for tracking events such as the winter solstice (the day with shortest number of daylight hours) that were important to agricultural peoples. This theory was supported by the discovery of an astronomical link between some of the images and various planets and stars. It was pointed out, for example, that on the day of the winter solstice, the Sun sets almost directly over a single long line drawn in the desert.
Another theory is that the Nazca images were created as a monumental art form expressing the Nazca people’s cultural and social importance in the region. Many ancient peoples built large monuments and artworks to demonstrate their power and celebrate their achievements. The Egyptians built massive pyramids, for example, and Easter Islanders curved massive human heads out of stone. It seems reasonable, therefore, to think that the Nazca images were built for similar reasons--to impress others.
A third theory focuses on the fact that there is evidence that people traveled by foot along the line. This has led to the speculation that the Nazca Lines represented sites of footraces in which individuals or groups of individuals competed for athletic victory. In this view, the Nazca images are ancient racetracks.
Listening
The three theories that you read give some very creative explanations for the Nazca Lines. But none holds up well unto the examination.
First, about the Nazca Lines as indicators of astronomic events. What the reading didn’t mention is that the vast majority of Nazca images don’t match up with anything observable in the sky. And for the few images they do, well, you know, there are hundreds of Nazca images and countless objects in the sky. Given these numbers, of course, a few line up. That would happen just by chance.
Second, the Nazca images as art. Well, it is certainly true that Nazca images are large, but they are impressive really only when seen from overhead, like in an airplane. When you’re sim* standing on the ground next to one of these images, it is not impressive at all. The landscape is too flat and the images are too large to allow people on the ground to recognize them. This is very different from the pyramids and the Easter Island stones. They are not just large, they are tall. It is their great height them makes them visible and impressive.
Third, the idea that people were using the lines as racing tracks. Some of the images are in the shape of animals. There is a monkey, a hummingbird, a spider and so on. And these images are too complex to make good locations for foot race. Ok, so what could count for the evidence that foot traveled along the line? We can’t be sure of course, but we know that other prehistoric peoples in the region had religious rituals that involved walking along especially created pathways. It could be that Nazca line played a role in religious rituals or ceremonies that involved walking along the line.

-penalty or punishment to the students
-asking teacher to create homework assignment that cannot be easily cheated

Agree or disagree:it is often not a good city to move to a new city or a new country because you will lose touch with old friends.
With the progress of urbanization, an increasing number of people are leaving their hometown and moving to a new place, which has aroused dee* social concern. When asked about whether it is advisable to move to a new city or country, many people, if not the most, are strong believers of the claim that moving to a new place leads to the loss of old friends. However, in my eyes, the above claim doesn’t bear more *ysis.
First of all, moving to a new place does not necessarily mean loss of old friends, in that the distance between people is no longer an obstacle for maintaining a friendship with the help of advanced communication devices and means of transportation. For one thing, such communication devices as telephones and the internet have made it possible to keep in touch with friends living far away from us. With the camera and microphone, our facial expressions and voice can be immediately transmitted to others, which is just like a face-to-face communication. For another, by using the well-developed transportation system , we are able to reach nearly anywhere in the world within a day. Take my own experience as an example. Last summer, Jack, one of my best friend, went to America for his master’s degree while I stayed in China for my study. However, this distance has never alienated our relationship, in that we often chatted online with Skype and even I took the international flight to visit him several times. While staying in America, we traveled together and had lots of fun, which would definitely enhance our friendship.
Furthermore, moving to a new city or country will provide us with a good opportunity to meet new friends and gain more opportunities to achieve success. On one hand, it is self-evident that a new environment enables us to make acquaintance with more people from different background, thereby enlarging our social circle. This is especially true of moving to a foreign country. While staying in a foreign country, we can not only experience the exotic culture and conventions but also establish friendship with native people there. On the other hand, moving to a new city * a lot to job seekers, especially those coming from rural areas. My brother, a bachelor of art, is a good case in point. While staying in hometown, he had no choice but to work in a local factory with low salary and little possibility to get a promotion. However, when he moved to Beijing, the situation became totally different. He used what he learned in college to land a good job in a large advertisement company and excelled at his jobs. Now he has become the manager of designing department. Therefore, I believe that it is the moving that has changed his path of life .
To sum up, we can conclude that it is a good choice to move to a new place because we can make more new friends and obtain more opportunities instead of losing old friends. Therefore, a new environment is full of challenges and fun.

The reading puts forward three reasons to illustrate the bad effects brought by those prairie dogs. However, the professor refutes these three strongly.
Firstly, the listening argues that the reason why the report had no photo but only draft drawings lied in two aspects. First, the photography technology at that time was not as advanced as it is now. As the imaging techniques was not good, the quality of the photos was low. In addition, when the experiment was conducted, it was cloudy; in such condition to capture the image of a flying plane was too difficult.
Secondly, the reading claims the design of Whitehead’s plane that only had one wing was not logical, for the plane usually had two or three wings at that time. However, the professor disagrees. In the recent, some researchers have made a copy of Whitehead’s plane based on his design diagram. They tested the copy planes four times, and each of them was successful.
Finally, the reading suggests that Whitehead had produced many engines and sold them to several aircraft builders, but in fact none of those engines used in planes had ever succeeded, illustrating that Whitehead had not successfully tested his plane. But the professor argues the problem that those engines did not work could not be blamed to Whitehead. It was because the technology was not so developed at that time and aircraft builders knew little about designing planes. The fact that there were people buying Whitehead’s engines actually proved that his design had no problem.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
Most advertisements make products seem much better then they really are.
Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
范文:
Advertising is one of the most useful ways for enterprise to convince their customers of the products. In fact, advertisements should be honest that it contains real information of the product. Meanwhile nowadays advertisement appears to be more misleading and make products better from the appearance.
Advertisement seems to make us hard to tell the reality from the fantasy. There is a specific example. When targeted to the young children, enterprises tend to use fantasy themes and characters from fantasy movies to help show off their product. Since young children tend not to tell the reality to the fantasy, they will be misled and believe that the product appearing in the advertisement is worth buying. But in fact, the quality of the product will disappoint its buyers.
Moreover, nowadays manufacturers tend to ask celebrities to advertise their products. This will also be misleading, too. The celebrities who advertise the product may not use the product at all and he knows nothing about the product. But the audiences tend to believe him since they think the celebrity is always responsible for what he said in a public situation. The celebrity makes this product worth buying, but in fact, it is not as good as the thing appears on the television.
Sometimes manufacturers just do not ask any celebrities to help them with advertising. What they do is just to find someone acting as the users of the product. This will be even more misleading since they better convince the audience that the product is of great use, since the audience tends to believe people who have something in common with themselves. On the contrary, the product is not usually so valuable that the audience is cheated by merchants.
Under these circumstances, advertisements seem misleading and make people feel better about the product. Although there is possibility that some advertisements are worth believing, at most time advertisement seems to guide us to a wrong direction.

It is more important to read and watch news presented by people whose opinion is different from your own view than by people whose opinion are similar to yours.
With advent of new technological gadgets, like laptop, tablet and smart phones, people now have access to all sorts of news sources. In face of the overwhelming news sources, some people tend to watch news that present similar ideas with them, while other prefer to watch news with different perspectives and ideas. I, personally, think it is far better to watch news with distinctive opinions and viewpoints based on the following reasons.
First off, news from various sources are biased and it is quite irrational to read or watch news from a single source, actually it makes better sense to be exposed to news that provide different kinds of ideas. Even though it is very essential for news media to be fair and unbiased, nonetheless, in reality, most of the news media are biased and prejudiced. Part of the reasons is that the news sources can be various, like the government, independent institutions or even think tanks. Lots of media or news agencies use phrases like "expert believes", "most people agree" or "observes argue that", all of which are pretty much biased since "most people" is a slippery word. The people might not represent the majority of the people and lack of diversity in terms of race, gender and other demographic factors.
Additionally, being exposed to news with distinctive opinions and ideas can help people to develop critical thinking skills and thus have a fair and more justified stance on certain issues. People varying in past life experience, education background and economic conditions tend to have totally different opinions on certain issues. Having access to different ideas can broaden people"s horizons and enrich one"s experience. For instance, I took it for granted that every child at an appropriate age has the chance to go to primary school until I watched a documentary about the elementary school enrolment in the poverty-stricken region in my country. Their family can barely feed them and the local government has little educational resource to provide them proper education. This documentary totally changed my perspective on the primary school enrolment in hinterland.
In all, exposure to news with different perspectives has lot of benefits since news sources are generally biased, and by watching news with different opinions we can have a much more fair and clear view. (Words:381, By Meng, Yan WECHAT: KICKASSTOEFL)

With the increasingly diverse means of acquiring information, it has become a common phenonmen that we are exposed to conflicting ideas about a single event, which has aroused deep social concern. A growing boday of average people are wondering whether it is more important to read and watch news presented by people whose opinion is different from your own view than by people whose opinion are similar to yours. From my pesepective, it is advisable to be a good listener to the different viewpoints.
Firstlly, receiving news presented by people with dissenting perspective can help people have access to the comprehensive information and get closer to the truth of the events. As is common sense, every single event or piece of news is not as simple as we expect. So it is an indisputable fact that nobody can have a panoramic view of the truth of the incidents due to the limited experience and knowledge span. In this case, gaining news from our opponents will definitely deliver a brandnew perspective and make us have a second thought of our own viewpoint. In other words, the clashes of different views will temper and refine our opinion about the events, with the result that a whole picture is formed. On the contrary, just selectively listening to the similar ideas, people will become narrow-minded.
Besides that, another potential benefit of obtaining news from those with opposite view is the higher likelihood to make acquaitance with more people. As is known to all, the way person responds to someone whose opinion differs drastically from theirs reveals their true character. To be specific, being tolerant of different voices about one thing reflects that a person is endowed with the quality of inclusiveness and humbility, which can make him/her leave a good impression on others. Consequently, no one, including those from opposing party, will refuse to become friends with humble and inclusive ones. Instead, those solely accepting same opinion are usually self-centered and arrogant so that they not consider others’ thought or feeling but impose their own opinion. Thus it is unlikely that they will build friendship with those with different ideas. Even worse, the alreadly established friendship may also end, once the disagreements occur.
In a nutshell, it is sensible for people to read or watch news from people with dissenting perspective, in order to gain the whole picture of the news and enlarge the social network.
