九江简介---九江发展史（evolution history) The name of Jiujiang originated from the records of Shangshu·Yugong (an ancient book). Jiujiang received its name because Nine is the figure head which Chinese people think, nine rivers join here (Ganjiang water, Po water, Yu water, Xiu water, Gan water, Xu water, Shu water, Nan water and Peng water). Jiujiang is on the southern bank of the juncture of the lower and middle reaches of the Yangtze River, PoyangLake and rives which flow through Jiangxi, Hubei and AnhuiProvince are flowing together here, it is spectacular sight of a vast expanse of misty.
Jiujiang was developed earlier in ancient time. In the Xia and Shang Dynasty, Jiujiang belongs to Jingzhou and Yangzhou. Jiujiang was located in the west territory of the Wu Kingdom and the east of the ChuKingdom during the Spring and Autumn Periods, so it was called "the head of the Wu Kingdom and the tail of the ChuKingdom". Jiujiang first came into being as an administrative division during the Qin Dynasty, Qin Shi Huang established 36 prefectures including Jiujiang prefecture. Later it was called Jiangzhou, Chaisang, Xunyang, Runan, Pencheng, Dehua etc. and among these Jiujiang, Chaisang, Xunyang and Jiangzhou are the best know.
From the east of Jiujiang to the west is 270km, and from the south of Jiujiang to the north is 140km, it covers an area of 18.8 thousand square km, and occupies 11.3% of the total of Jiangxi Province, the total population of Jiujiang is 4.662 million with 600,000 urban residents. The total planned area of urban districts is 118 square Km, 48.4 square Km of which has already been constructed. There are nine counties (Jiujiang, Wuning, Xiushui, Yongxiu, De’an, Xingzi, Duchang, Hukou, Pengze), one city (Ruichang), two districts (Xunyang and Lushan), one bureau (Lushan Cultural Sites Administrative Bureau) and two development regions (Jiujiang Economic & Technological Development Zone and Gongqing Development Zone) under Jiujiang’s jurisdiction.
